I think that it is possible for a teacher to plan a class lesson based on a students interest because i believe that students have a say based on education. I say this because in the reading Gerald Graff he talks about how students are more engaged in their work if they are reading and writing critically about something they are interested them, something that relates to their community and to their culture. He uses one example that says that students would be more interested if they were learning about sports, music or fashion. I agree because if I had the option to read a fashion magazine and write about, I would really be engaged in to it because that's something that grabs my attention. For example, a guy student would be more engaged in reading a sports illustrated magazine and they would be able to go in depth for the question that the teacher proposes for them to answer. They can even make an argument themselves about that certain interest because they know so much about it and they might be able to agree or disagree with other students comments about sports. Therefore I agree that teachers should plan lessons based on students interest because the student will be more engaged in their work.
What is the difference depth and breadth?
What is the value of having students evaluate/grade their own learning?
I think it's a great thing for students to evaluate their own grade on how they learn because they can learn and do right what they got wrong on what they did. For example, on an exam, if a student gets a C- on his exam then he can stay and work on the corrections with the teachers. That way they can have a chance to make their grade better, and learn the concept better.
I would like to respond to your point that proves how students should have a say on their grades. Not only the teachers should be the one that makes you feel good about your grades, you have to be able to feel good about your own grades and not let someone control your feelings. In addition to this your point about the difference between depth vs breath we have similar ideas about how we define these concepts and our point of view are almost the same.
